Marseille ambassador makes Cristiano Ronaldo transfer claim after Manchester United exit

Former Manchester United attacker Cristiano Ronaldo held talks with Marseille over a potential move last summer, according to club legend Basile Boli.

The Portuguese veteran left United last month following his controversial interview with Piers Morgan. Ronaldo criticised the club's owners as well as manager Erik ten Hag.

Now, Boli, who is currently an ambassador for the French club, has claimed that the 37-year-old spoke to Marseille about a possible transfer during the summer transfer window.

Ronaldo ultimately remained at Old Trafford, with the forward enduring a difficult campaign prior to his exit from the club. The former Real Madrid man scored just three goals in all competitions ahead of the break for the World Cup.

"Cristiano Ronaldo was in talks with Olympique [Marseille], I think he should have come. He is a talented player, even if he is a bit old, I think that in the French championship he still has something to give," Boli told NW TV.

"We saw that, for Messi, it didn't work out in the first year and then in the second year he proved he was number one."

Marseille have enjoyed a promising start to the campaign and currently sit fourth in the Ligue 1 table. Igor Tudor's side have won nine of their opening 15 matches.

Ronaldo's exit from Old Trafford has seen him linked with Saudi outfit Al Nassr, who have been installed as the leading contenders to secure his signature. According to multiple reports, the club have offered him a contract worth €200million (£173m) per season.

The Manchester Evening News previously reported that the 37-year-old was the subject of interest from an unnamed Saudi club during the summer, but that the Reds rejected the move.
