THANE: A 44-year-old married woman and her 28-year-old neighbour who had eloped to Karnataka six years back after stealing a huge cache of gold from her marital home were arrested from Taloja, the police informed on Sunday.
According to the police, the woman stayed with her husband and two children in the middle income settlement of Balkum in Thane. She was in love with her young neighbour who stayed in an adjoining building and after continuing their relationship for a few years, they decided to elope in 2017 with around 55 tolas gold from the woman’s home. Accordingly, the husband approached the Kapurbawdi police station and registered a complaint against the duo.
The police said they started search operations but failed to trace the duo who had switched off their respective mobile phones to avoid detection.
The police also said the man claimed he is related to a popular cricketer who had gifted a flat at Balkum to his family.
"The duo also got married in between and changed their names officially and applied for new identity cards. The couple stayed at various places in the state and Karnataka before settling down at Taloja. The man did some odd jobs for a living and the couple largely survived on the money sourced from selling the gold," informed investigating officer API Santosh Pimple at the Kapurbawdi police station.
However, the couple ran out of luck and were spotted by a few police informers at Taloja following which they were arrested. “The couple was presented before the court that sent them to police custody till March 2. We are investigating the case further,” informed the police.
