Marriage delayed, UP man files dowry plaint against parents

MEERUT: Thirty one-year-old Yogesh Kumar, a resident of Rohta in UP’s Meerut district, reached SSP Prabhakar Chaudhary’s office on Tuesday to file a complaint of “dowry” against his parents. He told the SSP that he was in love with a 26-year-old woman but his parents were seeking “too much dowry”, thus delaying his marriage.

In his complaint to SSP, Kumar wrote: “My parents not only want money but have given a long list of household appliances. She is not financially well-off.”

The SSP, who has now directed SHO Kankarkhera to probe the matter, said, “An FIR will be filed only once we get the probe findings.”

Eldest among five siblings, Kumar said all his siblings are married. He works as a local decorator and arranges religious events.

“I have been in love with my girlfriend for 12 years now,” he said, alleging that his parents had beaten him and his girlfriend and threw him out of the house.

“Had I wished for a court marriage, I could have fled with her long ago. I want the same dignity my siblings got at their weddings. I’m sure the police will help me marry the love of my life,” he added.
