The 21st edition of the Marrakech International Film Festival kicked off in Morocco, featuring a lineup of 70 films from 32 countries. This prestigious festival, one of the largest in the Middle East and North Africa, attracts actors and directors from around the globe.

Unlike other major film festivals like Venice, Cannes, or Toronto, the Marrakech festival places a special focus on emerging filmmakers and works from the Middle East and Africa. It aims to provide a platform for talent that is often underrepresented in the industry.

This year's event will include screenings of Oscar contenders and a diverse selection of films for the public to enjoy. Renowned figures such as Sean Penn, Alfonso Cuaron, and David Cronenberg are set to participate in conversations and tributes.

Artistic director Remi Bonhomme highlighted the festival's commitment to supporting filmmakers with unique voices and stories. The lineup includes works that explore a variety of themes, with a particular emphasis on family dynamics and social issues.

The festival's jury competition features 14 debut or sophomore films, with a panel of judges that includes actors Jacob Elordi and Andrew Garfield. The competition will be presided over by Luca Guadagnino, known for his work on 'Queer.'

Noteworthy films in competition include 'Across the Sea,' which follows a young Moroccan man's journey to Marseille, and 'Under the Volcano,' Poland's entry for Best International Feature at the Oscars.

Founded by King Mohammed VI of Morocco and overseen by Prince Moulay Rachid, the festival plays a vital role in promoting Moroccan cinema and supporting local filmmakers. This year's lineup includes a diverse range of Moroccan films that tackle topics such as immigration, homosexuality, and cultural identity.

The Marrakech International Film Festival continues to be a platform for celebrating cinematic diversity and amplifying the voices of emerging talents from across the globe.
