Markwayne Mullin’s off-the-cuff comment comes back to haunt him

  • Homeland Security Secretary Mullin may have inadvertently complicated the administration's year-long efforts to deport Kilmar Abrego Garcia , a Salvadoran immigrant.
  • The administration has been trying to deport Abrego Garcia a second time, primarily to Liberia, after he was wrongfully deported to El Salvador and ordered to return to the U.S.
  • Mullin told Congress the U.S. would be “happy” to send Abrego Garcia to Costa Rica, despite ICE repeatedly rejecting his attempts to send himself there. His legal team is now citing Mullin’s comments as evidence against his deportation to Liberia.
  • A federal judge recently dismissed a parallel criminal indictment against Abrego Garcia, ruling he was unlawfully targeted in retaliation for suing the government over his wrongful arrest and removal.
  • Abrego Garcia, who has an American wife and child, was previously subjected to torture in an El Salvadoran prison after an 'error' led to his deportation, prompting federal judges and the Supreme Court to order his return.
