Marks and Spencer praised for using woman with stomach rolls to model bra and knickers following skinny-shaming row

Marks and Spencer (M&S) has been flooded with praise for using a model with stomach rolls to show off its lingerie. It comes just a day after another woman with a slimmer figure was body shamed for doing exactly the same thing.

On social media, M&S shared a photo of a gorgeous plus-size model wearing its £29.50 Rosie Huntington-Whiteley full cup bra in silk. The bra, which has had almost 400 five-star reviews on the Marks and Spencer website, comes in six different colours, and is available in sizes 30A to 42E.

The £29.50 Rosie for M&S Lace Wired Full Cup Bra With Silk A-E has been called 'good quality' and 'stunning' by women who have bought it. One five-star reviewer wrote: "Good quality, fits well and looks stunning for my husband."

A second said of the £29.50 M&S bra: "Lovely fitting bra, true to size and replacing one I have had a long time." A third wrote: "Very comfortable. I will be purchasing another in a different colour."

Somebody else wrote: "Lovely bra, great shape under clothes. I wanted something that had shape but wasn't padded. The colour is very good for wearing under white clothes. Would highly recommend." "Good fit. Comfortable and looks lovely too. Soft but supportive. Would buy more of these bras," said another.

Another five star reviewer commented: "Love this bra, have now owned 5 identical ones as M and S have been making them a good few years now. I do like this colour, but I’d love some alternative pastel colours and prints to suit a blonde with a fair complexion. Had to throw out the pastel floral ones I had as they wore out, but I loved them."

But while the bra is worthy of note itself, it was the model wearing it which really caught people's attention. Shoppers rushed to compliment M&S on the choice of model, who could confidently be seen showing off her stomach rolls - something which is a norm for many people.

Monique Harland said: "Great to see a real woman with curves, modelling." Rossanne Reeves wrote: "Nice to see a curved model."

Jacky Hines said: "Love this pic ...she looks fantastic." Sue Bailey agreed with Jacky, replying:" Just thought exactly the thing she’s stunning."

Commenting under the same photograph on Instagram, @karenborman said: "Thank you for advertising on a model who has the body shape of most women." @jillpiper3 wrote: "She looks beautiful." @likeacarbutwithana said: "Gorgeous underwear on an even more gorgeous model. Well done M&S for using a variety of bodies."

The reaction is the polar opposite to that which M&S received for using a slim model to promote its lingerie earlier this week. After sharing a photograph of an equally gorgeous model in its 'pretty' £22 Linea Lace Wired Spring Floral Plunge Bra A-E, and the matching £10 high leg knickers, the retailer was forced to intervene when body shaming comments started to appear under the picture.

The model in this picture was also confidently showing off her stomach - though this time, she didn't have rolls. Also a norm for many people.

M&S sent a clear message to anybody being critical of the model's figure, and sent out a statement to social media users. It read: "We’d like to kindly remind our followers that we use our platforms positively. We’re proud to represent and celebrate people of all sizes and we won’t tolerate any unkind comments. All comments are monitored and anything unacceptable will be deleted. Let’s continue to uplift one another. Love, M&S x."

A Marks and Spencer spokesperson said: "We use a variety of models in our advertising campaigns and know our customers like to see a range of different people. We regularly create multiple campaigns that celebrate women, men, and children of all shapes, ages, and ethnicities. We're always interested to hear what our customers think about our campaigns and we'll make sure your feedback is heard."

The £29.50 Rosie Huntington-Whiteley full cup bra in silk is £29.50 on the M&S website, and is available in six colours in sizes 30A to 42E. The 'gorgeous' Boutique Linea lace range - which includes different styles of bras and knickers in a matching pattern to suit all body types - starts at £8 on the M&S website.
