Bots have been a part of social media since the AOL messenger days, but as platforms have matured and evolved, so have the bots that operate on them.
Now that artificial intelligence is on the minds of everyone from investors to everyday platform users, Meta Platforms (META) -) and CEO Mark Zuckerberg are hoping that a new generation of AI-powered chatbots will help reinvigorate Meta's newest project, Threads.

Meta could launch AI-powered chatbots on its services as early as next month as the company looks to farm engagement across its platforms, including Facebook and Instagram, the Financial Times reported.
The idea is for the AI-powered chatbots -- including one that offers travel recommendations and another that speaks like Abraham Lincoln -- to boost engagement.
Many industry watchers have been anticipating how Meta would further integrate artificial intelligence on its platform and how the company would leverage that into more ad dollars.

Citigroup published a note in June stating that analysts at the firm "believe Meta’s investments in GenAI can deliver incremental usage across its users, creators, and advertisers." The firm raised its price target on Meta by $45 to $360 per share as a result.
In February, Zuckerberg announced that his company was "creating a new top-level product group at Meta focused on generative AI to turbocharge our work in this area."
"Over the longer term, we'll focus on developing AI personas that can help people in a variety of ways. We're exploring experiences with text (like chat in WhatsApp and Messenger), with images (like creative Instagram filters and ad formats), and with video and multi-modal experiences."
