Puerto Rico's New Governor Faces Power Grid Challenges

Jenniffer González Colón was sworn in as Puerto Rico's new governor amidst a backdrop of widespread anger over a recent island-wide blackout. The Republican, who supports President-elect Donald Trump and hails from the pro-statehood New Progressive Party, secured a historic third consecutive term after winning the Nov. 5 election. González has vowed to address the island's failing power grid, which has been a major concern for Puerto Ricans.

Before her swearing-in ceremony at Puerto Rico's seaside Capitol, González attended Mass to seek wisdom and fortitude for her new role. However, the ceremony was disrupted by a lone protester highlighting the ongoing power crisis on the island.

González plans to appoint an energy 'czar' to review potential contractual breaches and address the issues with Luma Energy, the private company responsible for power distribution in Puerto Rico. The recent blackout left 1.3 million customers without power, with ongoing outages reported as crews work to stabilize the grid.

Despite the challenges, González remains optimistic about stabilizing the power system and addressing other pressing issues facing Puerto Rico, including its fragile economy and high debt load. She also faces the task of working with a federal control board overseeing the island's finances and reconstruction efforts post-Hurricane María.

One of González's key priorities is to improve the island's infrastructure and attract investors to boost the economy. She also aims to address housing affordability, reduce crime rates, and enhance the healthcare system, which has been strained by a shortage of medical professionals.

Additionally, González has expressed her support for Puerto Rico becoming the 51st state, following a nonbinding referendum where statehood received the majority of votes. However, any change in status would require approval from the U.S. Congress and the president.

As Puerto Rico's new governor, González faces a myriad of challenges but remains committed to addressing the island's pressing needs and working towards a brighter future for its residents.
