Mark Wright opens up on 'devastating' injury which left him 'heartbroken'

Mark Wright has revealed he was "heartbroken" to injure himself before last year's London Marathon and insists he has precautions in place to avoid a similar fate this time around.

The former TOWIE star, 35, is currently in training once again in a bid to successfully complete the gruelling run and opened up on the devastation he felt as he missed out last year. Just days before the race in 2021, Mark suffered a calf tear which forced him to pull out of the run.

He admits it was a "difficult decision" but was necessary and he is now being mentored by Paula Radcliffe in a bid to avoid any future mishaps.

Speaking to the Daily Star, the presenter said: "I'm taking extra precautions. Lots of recovery and not pushing myself too far. I'm really sticking to Paula's advice this time around and just doing everything I can to make sure I do my best on the day."

He went on to admit he was being strict with his diet as he ramps up the training and tries to keep his efforts on track. However, he says he hasn't cut out drinking but knows he must redirect himself if he does so.

Mark, who is married to actress Michelle Keegan, recently told the Mirror his training didn't stop when the pair went on holiday. He headed Down Under to spend time with his wife while she filmed her latest project.

Mark shared: "I've been out in Australia, so it's been great because my wife was working there. I wasn't, so I just had a lot of free time to go running and get these long distance runs in.

"They do take time, but I'm back now. It's going to be a little bit more difficult cause I've got my work on, but you've got to make it work. There's no way you can go into a marathon unprepared because that's when injuries happen."

And on his extra training, he continued: "I did a bit of strength training and a lot of sprints and other than that, it's just runs really and just different length runs; faster ones, longer, slower runs. Mixing it up."
