"We ask Please respect the family privacy."
Mark was a huge name on the rock scene and became known as a grunge icon following his work with bands The Screaming Trees, Queens of the Stone Age, and The Gutter Twins, among many others.
The rocker worked with others in the industry on a number of collaborations over the years, most recently with the Manic Street Preachers on their latest album The Ultra Vivid Lament.
He'd first worked alongside the band when they both supported Oasis on their 1996 US tour, and they'd kept in touch ever since.
Tributes to Mark poured in on social media following the sad news of his death.
Singer Anton Newcombe penned: "I am in absolute shock, a very beautiful soul has left this world. I love you brother…my deepest condolences to his family and friends."
While The Charlatans' Tim Burgess wrote: "Oh no. Terrible news that Mark Lanegan has left us. Safe travels man – you’ll be missed."
A cause of death has not yet been revealed.
Last year, Mark had survived a nasty battle with Covid that left him in a coma for months-long stretches.
He even wrote a memoir about it all, entitled Devil in a Coma, which was published last December.
It detailed his harrowing near-death experience, including a Covid-induced fall that saw him crack his ribs, as well as the recurring hallucinations he suffered.
He wrote in the book: "More and more this was reminiscent of an unending stretch in county jail that I couldn’t shake, with my trial date being intentionally undetermined, constantly moved around just to keep me inside."
The excerpt published by The Guardian continued: "Whatever was in this s**twagon I’d caught a ride on, it was no f**king joke. I’d taken my share of well-deserved ass-kickings over the years but this thing was trying to dismantle me, body and mind, and I could see no end to it in sight."
The American star had also been very open about his long-term issues with drugs.
