Sports games don’t get a lot of love at TGA or most award shows outside of their category. This year, Mario Kart World took the Best Sports Game trophy at TGA. This is surprising because it was competing against Sonic Racing: Crossworlds and EA FC 26, among others.
Sonic Racing: Crossworlds really surprised everyone this year. The game was great, and many considered it better than or equal to Mario Kart World. On the other hand, EA FC 26 was also nominated. While it didn’t get a lot of positive reviews this year, FC is a huge franchise, and it still does very well, even if it’s bad.
We already gave our opinion on which game should win the Game Awards in this category. And, our top picks were Sonic Racing: Crossworlds and Mario Kart World, with EA FC 26 as runner-up.
Is Mario Kart World a bad result? Definitely not, it’s a great game, and always has been. You can’t really screw up Mario Kart; it’s got a massive following and a lot of nostalgia attached to it. So, while I wanted Sonic Racing: Crossworlds to win, I am not too mad about the result.
What About The Other Nominees?

The nominees for the Best Sports Game category this year were:
- F1 25
- Mario Kart World
- EA FC 26
- Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds
- Rematch
Rematch never had a true chance. The game is fine, but it needs to mature a lot to be even considered the Best Sports Game. F1 2025 was a decent contender, but it lacks the following and love from the fans that the other three games have.
If EA FC 26 was good, it could have won the award. But we all know the current state of FC 26, which is why it didn’t get many votes.
So, the choice ultimately was between Mario Kart World and Sonic Racing: Crossworlds. Both Sonic and Mario are huge franchises with massive fanbases. But, when it comes to karting games, Mario Kart is and has always been superior. Sonic Racing: Crossworlds is an absolute banger of a game, but Mario Kart World has a massive following. And, when you talk about karting games, Mario Kart is the best there is.
