Aussie legend Margot Robbie almost found herself in hot water during her The Wolf of Wall Street audition. In fact, the Barbie star was terrified she’d be shipped off to some scary American jail after it was over!
You see, she was supposed to smooch Leonardo DiCaprio, but made a split-second decision to give him a big ol’ slap instead. She hadn’t warned anyone beforehand, so she realised afterwards it could have counted as “assault” or “battery”. Eek!
She recounted the awkward moment on the Talking Pictures podcast, saying the slap “was not in the script” and revealed the pair had been improvising in front of director Martin Scorsese.
After DiCaprio finished with the line “come over here and kiss me”, Robbie did something unexpected.
“In my head I was like, I could totally kiss Leonardo DiCaprio right now. That would be awesome. I can’t wait to tell all my friends this,” Robbie said. “And then I was like, ‘nah’. I just wallopped him in the face.”
The room went dead silent after Robbie’s rogue move, before both Scorsese and DiCaprio burst into laughter and told her it “was great”.
Robbie still couldn’t believe what had just happened, saying she had many thoughts running through her head.
“I was thinking, I’m going to get arrested. I’m pretty sure that this is assault, battery. Not only will you never work again, but actually you will go to jail for this, you idiot,” she joked. “And also why did you have to hit him so hard? You should have done it lighter.”
The Babylon star also revealed that she pushed to do full-frontal nudity in The Wolf Of Wall Street.
According to the actor, Scorsese gave Robbie the option to wear a robe if she felt more comfortable, but she thought a robe didn’t make sense for the scene where her character Naomi seduced Jordan Belfort.
“That’s not what she would do in that scene,” Robbie said on the podcast. “The whole point is that she’s going to come out completely naked — that’s the card she’s playing.”
It ended up being a great move for Robbie, because her career has only gone from strength to strength since. We love a strong female actor who advocates for what she wants, and it’s even better when they’re one of our own!
