Marcus Rashford's response to controversy surrounding late Man Utd winner

Marcus Rashford saw his late winner for Manchester United shrouded by controversy.

The England striker fired in during stoppage time to hand Ralf Rangnick’s side a 1-0 win over West Ham.

But the visitors were left upset as some replays showed a tight offside call as Edinson Cavani was played in to set up Rashford in the dying stages.

There was no lengthy review by VAR, who quickly awarded the goal as Rashford wheeled away in celebration.

After the game, it was put to Rashford that there was some doubt over whether the goal should have stood.

But he insisted he felt in real time that the goal was going to stand.

Rashford told Sky Sports: “I knew it wasn’t (offside) from Edi (Cavani) to me, and I don’t think it was from Anthony (Martial) to Edi.

“Before then I was just trying to get into the back post.

“It felt like a good goal and thankfully it stood.”

Alan Shearer, on the other hand, did feel that the goal should have been disallowed for offside.

Shearer said on BBC Radio 5 Live: “All four of us in the office thought it was going to be given offside. In the image we saw that was frozen Edinson Cavani looked offside.

“It will be tough to take for West Ham when you have worked so hard and fought so hard like they did. To lose it in that fashion it is hard to take.

“It's not the first and it won't be the last time that Manchester United will do that. They have done it so many times before.

“They have obviously got quality in forward positions so the guys they bring on will make a difference.”

For Rashford, it was his second goal in the space of a week and a welcome return to form after well-documented struggles this season.

He said: “They’re the best games to be involved in and when you’re on the winning side of it, it’s a great feeling.

“Nothing really beats it in football so very happy today, and a very big game against opposition who, at the moment, are very tight with us, so very important we got the win today.”
