Marcus Rashford copies Cristiano Ronaldo celebration after reaching Man Utd landmark

Marcus Rashford copied an old Cristiano Ronaldo celebration after scoring his 100th goal for Manchester United on Sunday afternoon.

The England international, who turns 25 on Halloween, headed in the winner for United in their 1-0 Premier League triumph against West Ham at Old Trafford. He is the 22nd player to score 100 competitive goals for the three-time European champions.

After reaching the landmark, Rashford gestured a number 100 sign to the Old Trafford crowd in the exact same way Ronaldo did when he scored his 100th goal for United. The Portuguese superstar reached the landmark in a 5-0 win against Stoke in November 2008.

Sunday afternoon's goal was a special one for Rashford, who is enjoying a revival under Erik ten Hag. He scored 43 goals for United in all competitions between August 2019 and May 2021 to establish himself as one of the Premier League's top forwards.

Yet Rashford was forced to rebuild his profile following a dreadful 2021/22 campaign, which saw him score just five goals in all competitions. He hasn't played international football since 2021 as a result of that drought, leaving his World Cup spot in doubt.

But Rashford is back in contention to make Gareth Southgate's squad after a superb start to this season. The prolific forward has scored seven goals and provided three assists in 15 games - including two in his last two outings against the Hammers and Sheriff.

"We didn't play well but good to win games like that," said Rashford after Sunday afternoon's win. "If we want to achieve our aims, we have to win games like that."

On his 100th goal, Rashford added: "[It's a] beautiful feeling. Something I have been working on, I feel I need to score more goals like that and keep getting in those areas. Pleased that I have managed to score today and it's always good to score regardless of whether Gareth Southgate is watching or not.

"[There is a] completely different energy in the team, we had a difficult start but we have to keep going. [David] de Gea, [Lisandro] Martinez, Harry [Maguire], Diogo [Dalot] - they were all brilliant. We held on and we defended well."

Rashford came through United's academy after joining the club aged seven and has gone on to play 318 senior games. The Manchester-born superstar has never played for another professional club during his career, as he has not completed any loan spells.

"It is fantastic and fantastic for Man Utd," said Ten Hag when asked about Rashford's milestone. "They have a great academy and a great history with the academy."

Ten Hag added: "On the 85th anniversary of always having a youth player in the squad or on the pitch... I think he is representing that fact and scores a brilliant goal with a great pass from [Christian] Eriksen. It was a great header. The day before his birthday, for his 100th goal, is a real milestone."
