Marco Asensio is keen to renew his contract at Real Madrid - but a dispute over his wages could open the door to the Spaniard leaving for Arsenal.
Asensio has one year left on his current deal with Los Blancos and has been offered an extension to remain at the Bernabeu. But the Spain international wants more than Real Madrid are seemingly willing to pay to commit his future to the club.
Meanwhile, Arsenal are looking to exploit the situation at Real Madrid, with Mikel Arteta a fan of Asensio. The midfielder has been given a deadline of June 20 to respond to the contract offer or risk it being removed from the table.
Should Asensio fail to reach an agreement with Real Madrid before the 20th then he will almost certainly leave the club in next summer's transfer window.
Whether the midfielder would pick Arsenal as his next destination, given he is also being monitored by the likes of AC Milan and Manchester United, remains to be seen.
He recently told the press: "We will see what I will do with my future. Renew or leave Real Madrid? I think there are three possibilities, there is also the option to stay and fulfil my contract year."
Asensio is yet to confirm his plans, but, according to Spanish publication Marca, he's willing to remain at Real Madrid for the right money.
He is said to have made it clear his desire is to snub Arsenal for the club he has represented since 2015.
But as previously reported by Mirror Football, there are some at Real Madrid who believe the 26-year-old wants to leave as a free agent at the end of next season.
Asensio last renewed his contract at Madrid in 2017 and recently parted ways with his lifelong agent, Horacio Gaggioli, for a man who makes big transfers happen, Jorge Mendes.
Arteta is keen to make some big signings at Arsenal this summer to improve upon the club's fifth-place finish last season.
But the Spaniard is growing increasingly frustrated by the slow pace in which the Gunners hierarchy appears to be moving to close deals, with fears the club may fail to get certain transfers over the line.
