Ecuador midfielder Marco Angulo has died at the age of 22 from injuries sustained in a car crash.

Angulo was in the collision in Ecuador’s capital, Quito, on October 7 and becomes the third person involved to have since died.

The car, a Ford Explorer, reportedly collided with a metal structure on the Autopista General Ruminahui at around 4.30am.

The LDU Quito youngster, who had three Ecuador caps, was rushed to hospital on the night and soon after underwent surgery on his skull and lungs.

But, 35 days later, on the morning of November 12, it was confirmed Angulo had passed away from his injuries.

"With deep pain and sadness, we regret to report the death of our beloved player Marco Angulo," LDU Quito said in a statement this morning.

"We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones. His departure is an irreparable loss that will leave an indelible mark on our hearts. Rest in peace."

"May you rest in peace," Ezequiel Piovi, LDU Quito captain, wrote on Instagram.

Two fellow footballers have also died from the crash; Independiente Juniors defender Roberto Cabezas Simisterra and Victor Charcopa Nazareno of Cuniburo FC.
