Marcelo Bielsa opts for Leeds United experience to face Newcastle United as team news released

Leeds United host Newcastle United at Elland Road this afternoon in a particularly consequential Premier League encounter.

The Whites sit ten points clear of their opponents, who are second from bottom and battling against the drop.

Leeds are eight points clear of the relegation zone, but could move 11 safe with victory at home today.

Marcelo Bielsa revealed in his pre-match press conference that Patrick Bamford would not be available, along with injured duo Adam Forshaw and Junior Firpo, who picked up hamstring problems in the 3-2 win over West Ham United.

Leeds United start with Illan Meslier in goal; the Frenchman has been an ever-present throughout all competitions this season.

At the back, Marcelo Bielsa has named Luke Ayling, Pascal Struijk and the returning Diego Llorente who has served his one-match suspension after picking up five yellow cards.

Rodrigo returns to the side from the start after his 20-minute cameo versus West Ham last weekend.

Meanwhile, hat-trick hero Jack Harrison continues on the flanks, supported by Raphinha and Daniel James in attack.

Leeds' net gain of one first-team player back from injury allows Bielsa to name a marginally more experienced bench, with Joe Gelhardt and Tyler Roberts both back from ankle and calf injuries respectively.

As has become habit this season, the substitutes' bench is bulked out by a number of U23 players, including recent Premier League debutants Leo Hjelde and Lewis Bate.

The visitors are without talisman centre-forward Callum Wilson today, however have reinforced in the January transfer window with the dual addition of Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood.
