Marathon World Record Holder Kelvin Kiptum Killed in Tragic Crash

Kenya Cabinet secretary for Youth Affairs, Sports and the Arts, Ababu Namwamba, addresses the media on the death of the Kenyan marathon world record-holder Kelvin Kiptum, in Nairobi, Monday, Feb. 12,

Marathon world record-holder Kelvin Kiptum and his coach, Gervais Hakizimana, tragically lost their lives in a car accident in Kenya. The incident occurred late on Sunday when their vehicle veered off the road, hit a tree, and ended up in a ditch. The accident took place near the town of Kaptagat, a renowned training base for top distance runners.

Kiptum, at just 24 years old, was considered one of the most promising talents in long-distance running. He had recently broken the world record at the Chicago Marathon, a feat that was officially ratified by World Athletics just a week prior to the accident. His untimely death has sent shockwaves throughout Kenya, where athletes are revered as national heroes.

President William Ruto expressed his condolences, describing Kiptum as the country's future. Kiptum's father, athletes, and family members gathered at the hospital mortuary where his and Hakizimana's bodies were taken. The tragedy has left the community heartbroken, with many struggling to find words to convey the depth of their loss.

With three of the seven fastest marathon times ever recorded under his belt, Kiptum was seen as a rare, exceptional talent.

The loss of Kiptum and his coach is a reminder of the fragility of life, even for those who appear invincible on the track. The Kenyan athletics community mourns the loss of a true future star and remembers Kiptum for his exceptional talent, insurmountable achievements, and the legacy he will forever leave behind.
