Bungie announced that Marathon is moving away from the seasonal model after two seasons of content, delaying the next major update, Symbiosis, to Dec. 8. The update features a permanent PvE mode, refreshed Perimeter, and more.
Symbiosis update for Marathon was initially scheduled for Sept. 22, but was delayed to address player feedback. “We’re also moving away from a strict seasonal schedule. Instead of tying major updates to fixed seasonal deadlines, we’re giving the team more flexibility to build, test, and improve features before they are released,” Bungie wrote in a blog post on Sept. 14.
The update is the next chapter for Marathon. It introduces a permanent PvE experience, offering a new way to explore, progress, and engage with the world beyond the extraction mode. According to Bungie, it’s “the beginning of a broader evolution through March and beyond.”
Other new features included in the update are the previously promised Perimeter update, social space with a firing range, a new Runner Shell, experimental TDM mode, and improvements to the onboarding experience.
As we approach Symbiosis, Oct. 6 will bring a smaller update to reset progression and the in-game economy, much like a regular seasonal reset. It will also bring a new rewards pass, QoL, and balancing changes. When it comes to modes, Bungie promises the return of Vault Breaker.
Marathon Season 2 launched on June 2 with a free week. While it had a spike in player counts, it quickly dwindled as the free week ended and the season start unintentionally accelerated progression. At the time of writing, the game averages 2,500 peak daily players.
New ways to play, social spaces, and a permanent PvE focus could reignite interest in the game. Especially since it already has great gunplay, buildcrafting, and environments. However, we’ll have to wait 12 weeks for Symbiosis to come out.
In the meantime, there will be blog posts and development team updates later this month and leading up to Symbiosis.
