Map shows when 100,000 households across Bristol region will get £301 cost of living payment

Nearly 100,000 struggling families in Bristol and the surrounding area are due a direct payment of £301 to help ease the cost of living crisis - and our map shows how many will benefit where you live.

Households on means-tested benefits will automatically receive £301 between April 25 and May 17, the Department for Work and Pensions says. That amounts to more than £2.4 billion in funding provided to families across the UK.

In our area, more than £28.8m is being shared out among 95,700 families.

In Bristol alone, 52,900 households will benefit, meaning that more than £15.9m will be pumped into struggling households in the city. That means more than one in four families (27.6%) will benefit.

Another 22,200 families will receive the £301 benefit in South Gloucestershire (18.8% of all households in the area), and 20,600 in North Somerset (21.8%).

You can see how many people will receive the benefit where you live with this interactive map:

Households could be eligible for this payment if they are in receipt of benefits including Universal Credit, Pension Credit, and older benefits such as Jobseekers Allowance and Income Support.

The first cost of living payment will be followed by a handout of £150 to 6.7m disabled people this summer.

There will then be a second cost of living payment of £300 in the autumn, and pensioners are set to benefit from £300 during the winter.

Finally, a third cost of living payment of £300 will be paid in spring next year.

That means people on means-tested benefits will receive £900 but some people will receive up to £1,350 in direct payments.

All payments will be made automatically to eligible households, there is no need to apply.

Mel Stride, the Work and Pensions Secretary, said: “These payments will give a financial boost to more than eight million households as we continue to wrap our arms around the most vulnerable, while the best way we can protect people from high costs is to halve inflation by the end of this year.”

Chancellor of the Exchequer, Jeremy Hunt added: “Not only are we providing £900 in direct cash payments to millions of the most vulnerable households, we’ve also extended the energy price guarantee to hold bills down until energy prices fall, raised the national living wage to £10.42, put an end to the prepayment meter premium and delivered a plan that will more than halve inflation this year – ensuring everyone’s incomes go further.”
