Many Indias usher in New Year with food & prayers

KOLKATA: After two years of struggle with Covid, Telugus celebrated Ugadi, Marathis Gudi Padwa, Sindhis Chetti Chand and Marwaris and Gujaratis Navratri in a grand manner on Saturday. Chief minister Mamata Banerjee, too, wished the communities on the occasion of the New Year festivities.

Nishi Pulugurtha, professor at Brahmananda Keshab Chandra College, said, “Ugadi is generally a home affair. We begin the day by having ugadi pachhadi — a kind of chutney made of neem, jaggery, banana and unripe mangoes — and put on new outfits. We cook some customary Andhra cuisine like pulihora (a rice dish), bobbattulu (a sweet dish) to mark this day.” She also had a get-together with her friends in the afternoon.
