Drivers have been warned to avoid part of a Nottinghamshire town after a large sinkhole appeared. Part of Violet Hill in Mansfield has been closed after a drain reportedly collapsed, causing a sizable sinkhole to form in the road which was spotted on Sunday, March 19.
Nottinghamshire County Council is aware of the sinkhole, with highways maintenance teams from VIA East Midlands accessing the damage on Sunday (March 19). Nigel Moxon, county councillor for Mansfield East, shared a warning for motorists who had removed cones and attempted to drive on the pavement to avoid the sinkhole.
In a Facebook post, Mr Moxon said: "Violet Hill is closed northbound (towards Forest Town, from Oak Tree Lane). This is due to a sink hole appearing as a result of a collapsed drain.

"I met with VIA East Midlands this morning (March 19) who brought me up to date with what is happening. They have had to come out again this morning to put out more cones, as motorists are taking it upon themselves to move them in order to drive on the pavement to get around the hole.
"Please DO NOT attempt to move the cones that have been put out for your safety and that of residents on Violet Hill. And please don’t attempt to travel north on Violet Hill - you won’t be able to get through. The roads around Mansfield are worse this morning due to closures because of the fire at Forest Road/Nottingham Road junction.
"Please allow more time for your journey when you head out today and tomorrow (Monday, March 20) and avoid the areas if possible."
Severn Trent said it would be investigating the issue and would make repairs if the problem was related to its network. A spokesperson said: “We have been made aware of a possible sinkhole on Violet Hill in Mansfield. A team will investigate the issue and if it relates to the Severn Trent network, we'll work out the best way to make a repair as quickly as possible.”
