Mansfield mum and son fled flat after drugged-up man walked in and grabbed knife

A terrified boy and his mum were saved from a shirtless and bloodied man with a knife through the child's bedroom window. Her fiancé had been for a cigarette outside when drugged up Nathan Proctor went into their home, claiming there was someone with a gun who was trying to kill him.

The lady tried to calm Proctor down but he went into her kitchen and grabbed a kitchen knife with a ten to 13 centimetre blade, Nottingham Crown Court heard on Tuesday (January 31). The woman ran with her son to a bedroom but could not properly close the door because a door stop was in the way.

Proctor, who had taken cocaine and alcohol, banged repeatedly on the door whilst the woman pleaded with him to leave them alone. Her fiancé heard their screams and went to his son's bedroom window and helped them escape. Proctor left the address, in Heathfield Way, Mansfield, with the knife in his hand on July 12 last year.

He told police he was running for his life from someone with a machete, the court heard. He was taken to King's Mill Hospital, Sutton-in-Ashfield, with a suspected cocaine-induced heart attack.

At the hospital, he attempted to hide cannabis in a shower room, and was charged with possession of the drug, possessing a bladed article, and affray - the last two charges relating to the terrifying incident in Heathfield Way. Proctor was to say there was an altercation between him and another where he was struck with a bat and he used a knife to defend himself.

The mum, who had never met Proctor before, said in a statement she "felt like she was going to die" and has since moved to Poland. Proctor, 30, of Bagshaw Street, Pleasley, Mansfield, who pleaded guilty, was sentenced to 18 months in jail and will serve half before his release on licence.

The court heard, in mitigation, Proctor went to the woman's address with the genuine belief he was being attacked and seeking a safe space. He saw a man (the woman's fiancé) peering through the window and thought it was someone coming to attack him.
