Police have asked drivers to avoid part of Mansfield after a fire broke out at a derelict mill. As many as 20 fire engines were called out to the fire which has ripped through Hermitage Mill in Hermitage Lane on the morning of Monday, March 28, resulting in travel disruption.
Hermitage Lane is closed in both directions due to the incident between the A38 Sutton Road and Hamilton Way. Drivers are being asked to plan alternate routes as Hermitage Lane, Sutton Road End and Hamilton Way are currently closed.
There has been no official diversion issued but to get onto Hamilton Road, past the cordon, drivers can follow the A38 Sutton Road to Kings Mill Road East, and then onto the A617 Sherwood Way South towards the section of Hamilton Road which is open. A longer route would be to get on Sheepbridge Lane, off the A38, before joining the A60 Nottingham Road and turning onto Sherwood Way South.
Chief Inspector Paul Hennessy, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “We would please ask drivers and the public to stay away from the area while emergency services deal with this large-scale incident and to plan alternate routes while we have roads closed in the surrounding areas."
Police remain at the scene working with colleagues from Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service and East Midlands Ambulance Service. Incident commander Bryn Coleman, of Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service, said crews from across the county were called to the fire at 3am on Monday.
He said the fire had been contained but that the road closure was having an affect on local businesses. But he added the Robin Hood Railway Line, which runs from Nottingham to Worksop, remained open.
In an update posted by Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service at around 9am they said that Hermitage Lane in Mansfield is still closed is expected to reopen mid morning.
Other local road closures have been lifted. Nottingham Fire and Rescue Service still have 5 fire engines and 1 Aerial Ladder Platform present but any debris in the surrounding area is now safe.
