A major manhunt is currently in progress in northern Austria following a tragic incident where a hunter allegedly shot and killed two individuals before fleeing the scene. The incident took place in the village of Altenfelden in Austria's rural Muhlviertel region, near the border with Germany and the Czech Republic.
One of the victims has been identified as Franz Hofer, the mayor of Kirchberg ob der Donau. The second victim was shot shortly after the initial incident, as confirmed by Upper Austria police spokesperson Ulrike Handelbauer.
Authorities have launched a large-scale police operation involving helicopters and special forces to locate the suspect, who is believed to be armed. Local residents have been advised to remain indoors for their safety.
According to reports, the shooting may have stemmed from a dispute over hunting rights, with the suspect known to hunters in the area. Described as a 'difficult person' by a local hunter, the suspect's actions have left the community in shock.
Officials from the People's Party (OVP) regional headquarters in Linz expressed disbelief and sorrow over the tragic incident. State party leader Florian Hiegelsperger described the situation as 'madness,' while Herbert Sieghartsleitner, the state hunting master, called the incident 'unbelievable.'
Expressing deep shock over the loss of Franz Hofer, Sieghartsleitner emphasized his personal connection to the victim and the impact of the tragedy on the community.
