HYDERABAD: Mangoes have left a bitter taste among fruit lovers this summer. Not only its price has hit the roof even the stock arrivals has been late into the markets, leaving the mango lovers disappointed. But, there is a strong reason for this unprecedented phenomenon this time round.
Scientists attribute the massive dip in fruit production to decrease in the sex ratio of mango flowers as a result of climate change. Mango crop productivity has fallen from approximately five tonnes per hectare to 2.5 tonnes per hectare in Telangana — a first in the state since its formation. This has led to a steep rise in mango rates which are sold in excess of ₹120-₹150 a kg.
