Mangaluru: MSc student breaks hand, may miss exam

MANGALURU: A final-year MSc (environmental science) student from Mangalore University is worried about her future, after she met with an accident when riding a two-wheeler, and attempting to avoid a pothole on Friday. The accident took place on the Netravati Bridge on National Highway-66, on the way to Mangalore University.

Nishmitha P S, 22, has undergone surgery, and doctors have told her that the plaster will be on for a minimum two months, and it will require about six months to remove the rod that has been inserted in her hand.

She said, “ I used to stay in the university hostel in Konaje. However, since there were no classes the next day, and I had to complete my project work, I decided to return home to Kottara on my two-wheeler on Friday. It was raining heavily. Around 5.30 pm, when I reached the Netravati Bridge, I failed to notice a pothole with iron rods protruding from it. My vehicle’s front wheel crashed into it, and I applied brakes suddenly, due to which I fell on the road which caused my right hand to get fractured, and I sustained bruises to my wrists and knees. I was rushed to a nearby private hospital by locals, and later to another private hospital in Kadri for advanced treatment. The doctors have said that it will take another six months to remove the rod installed after the surgery,” Nishmitha said.

Expressing concern about her future, she said, “My dream is to become a lecturer, and I was preparing for the UGC-NET exam, which is scheduled on August 11 and 12. I had to complete my project work, which is mandatory in the final semester. I doubt if I will be able to attend the final-year semester examinations and UGC-NET exam. The college student council has approached the registrar of Mangalore University, requesting a special concession,” she added.
