The Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU) has appointed Lok Sabha MP representing Mandya, Sumalatha Ambareesh, as a member of the high-level Advisory Group on Countering Terrorism and Violent Extremism.
The IPU’s high-level Advisory Group on Countering Terrorism and Violent Extremism was established to serve as the global focal point for parliamentary activities related to counter terrorism efforts and is composed of members of Parliament from various countries.
A statement said Ms. Sumalatha becomes the first Indian MP to be nominated to this high-level grouping and will be member for a period of five years.
The MP, in a statement, has expressed her happiness over the appointment, which is coming at not only on the 75th year of Indian independence, but also when “Vasudaiva Kudumbakam” is resonating across the world.
The MP is part of the delegation accompanying Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla for the Inter Parliamentary Summit at Luanda in Angola, which is under way.
While thanking Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Speaker for her nomination, Ms. Sumalatha said the recognition belongs to the people of Mandya, who had shown tremendous faith and support in her.
“As part of the summit, Sumalatha will engage in a range of bilateral talks with counterparts from various other countries on a range of issues. Such an interaction amongst global Parliamentarians will help resolve many impending issues being faced by the world and will help realize the ‘Viksit Bharat 2047’ vision of our Hon’ble Prime Minister,” she said in her statement.
