Mandy Moore joins Anne Hathaway in calling for a third Princess Diaries movie

Mandy Moore has joined Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews in calling for a third instalment of The Princess Diaries.

The Disney movie and its sequel came out in 2001 and 2004 respectively.

It became a huge hit across the world as fans fawned over the Princess of Genovia, Mia Thermopolis (played by Anne).

Singer Mandy played Lana Thomas, a popular cheerleader who bullies Mia and other students, so fans were delighted when Mia smeared ice cream all over Lana's cheerleader uniform in the first film.

Almost 18 years have passed since the last Princess Diaries movie and the stars are ready for another one.

Mandy, 38, appeared on The Drew Barrymore Show when the topic turned to the possibility of returning for a third film.

The actress said Lana would still need a redemption arc, but the idea of playing onscreen besties with Anne is too good of an opportunity to turn down.

"She’s done a 180, she’s turned her life around and she and Mia become really good friends," Mandy said of her first feature film.

"So, I would be game, I mean Anne Hathaway, Julie Andrews, like that was such a pivotal, seminal moment in my life.

"I would love, love, love to join those ladies again, anytime, but I also understand if there’s no room for my awful character."

In 2019, Anna revealed a script for a third movie had been written.

"There is a script for the third movie. There is a script,” Anne said during a January 2019 appearance on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen .

"I want to do it. Julie [Andrews] wants to do it. Debra Martin Chase, our producer, wants to do it. We all really want it to happen."

She added that the team doesn't want to do it if it isn't 'perfect' as 'we love it just as much as you guys love it'.

"It’s as important to us as it is to you, and we don’t want to deliver anything until it’s ready, but we’re working on it," Anne added.

The second film saw Anne's character finish university and become the new Queen of Genovia.

Chris Pine, who plays Nicholas Deveraux, also professes his love for her.
