Manchester United young goalkeeper signs new contract and seals deadline day loan

Manchester United youngster Matej Kovar signed a new contract at the club before he left on loan to join League One side Burton Albion.

Kovar, 21, sealed a loan exit late on deadline day and will now spend the remainder of the campaign working under the guidance of Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink.

The Czech goalkeeper also signed a new United contract ahead of the loan exit, putting pen to a deal lasting until June 2023, with the option of an additional year’s extension.

After continuing to impress at youth level for United, Kovar earned a call up to the Czech Republic senior squad in September last year.

His move to Burton will mark his second temporary spell away from the club, having gained valuable experience across 21 games for Swindon Town last season.

Speaking after confirmation of the deal, Hasselbaink expressed his delight at getting such a good player in to provide competition for Ben Garratt in the Brewers' net.

“Kovar will come in and make life hard for Ben and provide some good competition at the club," said Hasselbaink.

“He will add some great competition, he is a young keeper and we felt like we needed another one in the door.”
