Manchester United without three players for Sevilla fixture

Erik ten Hag is optimistic Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford will make a swift return from his apparent groin injury.

United confirmed on the eve of Ten Hag's pre-match press conference that Marcus Rashford is unavailable for "a few games" and he is a doubt for the FA Cup semi-final against Brighton on Sunday week.

Luke Shaw and Alejandro Garnacho are still unavailable for Manchester in their Europa League quarter-final first leg against Sevilla.

Shaw came off in the first half of the 1-0 win against Brentford last week while Garnacho has been sidelined since the goalless draw with Southampton on March 11 with an ankle injury. Ten Hag admitted Garnacho's injury is "more severe".

"It's a few games, so that's the statement," Ten Hag said. "So I can't give more details of it because we don't know, We have to see how the injury develops."

"Both not available. Definitely, the injury of Garnacho is more severe but I expect Luke Shaw back at a short notice.

"Of course it's a setback, he's (Rashford) disappointed about it but he's not totally broke because he knows he will return quickly, he is optimistic, he will start straight on with his recovery and his rehab, so that helps to get back soon."

Rashford and Garnacho are still both expected to return before the end of a season that could end as late as June 3 for United if they reach the FA Cup final.

Sevilla are 13th in La Liga but they eliminated United from the Champions League in the round-of-16 in 2018 and defeated United in the semi-finals of the Europa League in 2020.

The Spanish side have won the Europa League six times since its format changed in 2004-05 and that pedigree is not lost on Ten Hag. "Your question tells that answer; because they have a big reputation in the Europa League.

"They have won it more than any other club, so that is a magnificent record. We have to be aware of it because that's their target and we are sure they are 100 per cent motivated to go again.

"So if we want to beat them, we have to play our best football and everyone has to deliver their best performance. When you don't do it, we have a problem. We need to be fully focused and fully prepared for this game.

"We want to play dynamic, we want to surprise opponents so it is difficult to read our game, as I just remarked, we are defending with 11 players and I want my team to attack with 11 players.

"So big moments, big chances in transitions, we work on our day every day and every game and we have to improve every game."
