Manchester United vs Aston Villa LIVE: Record-breaking Fernandes inspires hosts to crucial Premier League win

Record-breaking Bruno Fernandes inspired Manchester United to a crucial Premier League win over Aston Villa as Michael Carrick’s side took a huge step closer to returning to the Champions League with a 3-1 victory at Old Trafford.

Fernandes overtook David Beckham’s record with his 15th and 16th assists of the season - the most from a Manchester United player in a single Premier League campaign - as he set up Casemiro’s header from a corner before releasing Matheus Cunha for the second with a stunning through pass.

In between, Ross Barkley equalised for Unai Emery’s side to briefly stun Old Trafford, but Cunha’s calm finish on the breakaway was quickly followed by super-sub Benjamin Sesko striking from the bench once again to wrap up three important points in the top-five race.

The result strengthens United’s hold of third place, as they move three points clear of fourth-placed Villa, but Emery’s out-of-form side could be overtaken by Liverpool if last season’s champions defeat Tottenham at Anfield later this afternoon.

Man Utd take major step towards Champions League as Michael Carrick blueprint becomes clear

17:31 , Chris Wilson at Old Trafford

It all started with a set-piece, as so many Premier League games seem to these days, but by the end Manchester United’s 3-1 win over Aston Villa had become an advert for the benefits of good old fashioned wingers and number nines.

Much has been made of the role of set-pieces in the league as several sides have struggled to reliably create goals from open play, but in the end United took a giant leap towards next season’s Champions League in a more familiar manner, with Matheus Cunha the star as he and Benjamin Sesko sealed the result.

Utd 'followed our plan very well' - Fernandes

17:10 , Flo Clifford

More from Bruno Fernandes on Sky Sports: “In the Premier League every game is difficult. Villa are very well organised and know what they have to do. The plan against us is always very good. They have individual players that can make such a difference.

“It was about following our plan, we did it very well. We knew they had a high line and had to make sure our runs were on point. It looks easy but it is more difficult. If the timing is not perfect its very difficult. We did it today and we won the game.”

United 'certs' for Champions League place - Roy Keane

17:01 , Flo Clifford

Roy Keane tells Sky Sports Man United are “certs” for a Champions League berth.

He says: “No distractions, just focus on the games, get some recovery. Villa looked a bit flat today, United in the second half were pretty comfortable.

“If you give players like Bruno time and space, you're going to be punished.

“I think United are absolute certs for that Champions League spot.”

Premier League action continues

16:20 , Flo Clifford

Liverpool could do United a further favour with a win over relegation candidates Tottenham in the 4.30pm kick-off at Anfield.

'Main achievement would be top spot' - Fernandes on assists record

16:15 , Flo Clifford

Fernandes is asked about his new club record for most assists in a season. He says: “I'm more proud and pleased because I did it serving my team-mates. Giving joy to the others is also very good.

“When you play in the position I play, I'm very happy I can help them to score and be happy in that moment.

“It's a huge achievement for me but the main achievement would be in the top spot at the end of the season.”

'The job is done' - Bruno Fernandes

16:10 , Flo Clifford

Bruno Fernandes, who deservedly has picked up the man of the match award, tells Sky Sports: “It was very important because it was against a direct opponent, we had the same points, to gain this advantage from them is always good. We knew we needed to win the game after the last game. Today we did the job.

“I still think we can do much better but the job is done.”

Elsewhere...

16:05 , Flo Clifford

Elsewhere in the top flight 10-man Leeds have clung on for a point in a scrappy goalless draw away to Crystal Palace, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin missing a penalty.

Nottingham Forest have eked out a point in another 0-0 draw with Fulham, after having a Dan Ndoye goal ruled out.

West Ham are back in the bottom three, level on points with 17th-placed Forest, with Burnley and Wolves rounding it out.

How the table looks

16:02 , Flo Clifford

So with that win United are firmly in third, seven points off City, and six points clear of Chelsea in fifth and Liverpool in sixth.

Villa could slip down to fifth if Liverpool beat Spurs later this afternoon.

Man Utd 3-1 Aston Villa

15:59 , Chris Wilson at Old Trafford

A big win for United in the battle for Champions League places as they move three points above their opponents. Carrick’s side are well-placed now and there seems a small sense of relief around Old Trafford at full-time.

FULL-TIME: Man Utd 3-1 Aston Villa

15:58 , Flo Clifford

‘90+8: And that’s pretty much that. United cement their grip on third and have one foot in next season’s Champions League.

CHANCE! Man Utd 3-1 Aston Villa

15:57 , Flo Clifford

‘90+8: Huge wasted opportunity for Villa! Abraham is closed down in the box and lays it off for Garcia and Luiz across an empty goal, but the pair get in each other’s way!

Man Utd 3-1 Aston Villa

15:53 , Flo Clifford

‘90+5: The ‘oles’ are out in force from the home support. After a pretty dismal first half United turned the screw in the second.

Amad has a shot deflected off Konsa, which Martinez gathers.

Man Utd 3-1 Aston Villa

15:50 , Flo Clifford

90+2: Ugarte tries to set Fernandes away... too much on it and Martinez collects.

Man Utd 3-1 Aston Villa

15:49 , Flo Clifford

‘90+1: EIGHT minutes added on. Not entirely sure where they’ve all come from, to be honest.

Man Utd 3-1 Aston Villa

15:49 , Flo Clifford

‘90: Casemiro gets a rousing send-off as he’s replaced by Ugarte.

Sesko makes his case

15:47 , Chris Wilson at Old Trafford

A fortunate third for United but an illustration of why Sesko should have started, the Slovenian providing far more presence in the box and an obvious striker’s instinct before benefitting from the deflection.

Man Utd 3-1 Aston Villa

15:47 , Flo Clifford

‘89: Casemiro finds Amad, he’s got options either side, Sesko is there, but Villa nab the ball back.

Villa have two corners in quick succession after the ball flicks off Casemiro. Bogarde clips it across... nothing doing.

Man Utd 3-1 Aston Villa

15:45 , Flo Clifford

‘87: Just before that Emery hauled off goalscorer Barkley and Digne, for Luiz and Maatsen.

The problems are mounting for Villa because Buendia is down having picked up an injury, and he comes off for Garcia.

Man Utd 3-1 Aston Villa

15:44 , Flo Clifford

‘85: That’s Sesko’s ninth Premier League goal of the season and he leaps for joy. A huge difference-maker off the bench.

Sesko sprints away on the counter and latches onto another great ball by Fernandes, he wants another... but gets it horribly wrong, spraying it well wide of goal. Was that a shot, or an attempt to lay off to Amad? Hard to tell.

GOAL! Man Utd 3-1 Aston Villa

15:40 , Flo Clifford

‘81: Sesko the super-sub!

Fernandes lofts the ball in to Cunha, who fizzes in another cross from the left. It pinballs around a little but Sesko regains it and hits it on the turn; it takes a deflection off Buendia and that scuppers Martinez.

Carrick does a little jig on the sidelines.

Man Utd 2-1 Aston Villa

15:37 , Flo Clifford

‘78: That was Fernandes’ 16th Premier League assist of the season, breaking David Beckham’s previous club record of 15, and his 100th for United in all competitions.

Man Utd 2-1 Aston Villa

15:34 , Flo Clifford

‘76: Yoro has been booked for a block in the build-up to that goal.

Sesko finally comes on, with Mbeumo, shaking his head but applauding as he comes off. Is he limping a little, or just miffed to be going off?

Cunha puts United back in front after strong Villa spell

15:31 , Chris Wilson at Old Trafford

The goal comes at a good time, just as Villa were beginning to wrestle back some control. A lovely finish from Cunha, who has once again been one of United’s most threatening players so far.

Another assist from Bruno Fernandes too, with the United captain edging closer to that Premier League assist record.

Man Utd 2-1 Aston Villa

15:30 , Flo Clifford

‘72: It’s a great ball forward by Fernandes, with Cunha opening up his body and slotting it past Martinez. An excellent response by United. Emery is furious.

GOAL! Man Utd 2-1 Aston Villa

15:29 , Flo Clifford

‘71: Buendia has picked up a booking for dissent, somehow. Bailey comes looking for Rogers but now we’re back up the other end; Fernandes finds Cunha and he rolls it into the far corner!

Villa carved apart.

CHANCE! Man Utd 1-1 Aston Villa

15:27 , Flo Clifford

‘69: Haha, having said that, Onana looks to have just given a cheeky grin and said he did get a touch! Well, ‘no conclusive evidence’ of handball was the verdict.

Villa now look a different team but Abraham wastes a golden chance; his fellow sub Bailey sends in a cross but his touch isn’t great and Dalot nicks it off him.

United failed to deal with Villa move

15:25 , Chris Wilson at Old Trafford

It was a great finish from Ross Barkley, and Villa are level. United are complaining but they didn’t do enough to clear the ball when they had the chance.

VAR CHECK: Man Utd 1-1 Aston Villa

15:25 , Flo Clifford

‘67: VAR are inspecting whether the shot touched Onana on the way in, with the Villa man doing his best to get out of the way. It would be incredibly harsh as it looks to have barely brushed him - and VAR agrees, the goal stands!

GOAL! Man Utd 1-1 Aston Villa

15:23 , Flo Clifford

‘64: Villa counter! Buendia races down the centre and the ball is worked to the right. Onana is closed down by Casemiro and Shaw but is quickly up again and Lammens flails to his shot, tipping it behind for a corner.

It comes out to Digne who whips it back in, and it’s Barkley, on his first Premier League start in more than a year, who fizzes it in on his weaker left foot and past Lammens!

But VAR is getting involved...

Man Utd 1-0 Aston Villa

15:20 , Flo Clifford

‘62: Casemiro sends a ball over the top for Dalot... Martinez watches the flight of the ball and collects the header.

Man Utd 1-0 Aston Villa

15:19 , Flo Clifford

‘61: Emery rings the changes. Bailey and Abraham are on, McGinn and the confidence-shorn Watkins off.

Man Utd 1-0 Aston Villa

15:18 , Flo Clifford

‘59: That was Casemiro’s sixth goal from a set-piece this season; no other player has more than four.

Rogers has been clattered again by Casemiro and the Brazilian sees yellow for it, and concedes another free-kick, centre-right.

Mings gets under the delivery but has his back to goal and gets his angle all wrong, heading wide!

Man Utd 1-0 Aston Villa

15:15 , Flo Clifford

‘57: Waheyyyy, shout the crowd as Buendia sends it into the wall. Out for a Villa corner.

Man Utd 1-0 Aston Villa

15:15 , Flo Clifford

‘57: Villa try to respond. Casemiro makes an error now though as he trips Rogers and concedes a free-kick. Digne and Buendia stand over it, 25 yards out in a very central position.

Set-pieces come good once again

15:13 , Chris Wilson at Old Trafford

There’s been a lot of conversation around set-pieces and Premier League sides relying on them for goals of late, and once again it’s United main set-piece threat who comes up with a goal. It felt like the kind of game that would need that sort of goal to open it up.

GOAL! Man Utd 1-0 Aston Villa

15:12 , Flo Clifford

‘53: Casemiro!

Another corner is whipped in by Fernandes, Casemiro leaps to it in front of Mings, and glances it off the far post and into the far corner! Martinez was leaping to it but stood no chance.

The Brazilian celebrates wildly and thumps his badge to the Stretford End.

'SAVE! Man Utd 0-0 Aston Villa

15:10 , Flo Clifford

‘52: Rogers gives the ball away cheaply and Fernandes floats away down the centre, laying it off for Mbeumo - and Martinez parries it away!

Man Utd 0-0 Aston Villa

15:10 , Flo Clifford

‘51: A Bruno Fernandes cross takes a sky-high deflection and out for a corner. It’s headed out to the edge of the box, where Cunha strikes, but not cleanly, and it’s wide.

Man Utd 0-0 Aston Villa

15:07 , Flo Clifford

‘48: Mbeumo chests down the ball in the centre and it’s well worked to Amad out the right, but his attempt thumps well over the bar, à la Dalot in the first half.

No changes at the restart, by the way. Sesko still twiddling his thumbs on the bench.

Man Utd 0-0 Aston Villa

15:05 , Flo Clifford

‘46: United press immediately with four crosses in quick succession; Shaw sends one in that Konsa punts away.

SECOND HALF: Man Utd 0-0 Aston Villa

15:03 , Flo Clifford

Back underway at Old Trafford. Hopefully for a more exciting half.

Half-time verdict

14:55 , Chris Wilson at Old Trafford

Another of those games where the margins are so small, with only one notable chance in the first half as Diogo Dalot fired over from close range.

For United, Mbeumo’s use as a centre-forward simply hasn’t worked against the visiting centre-back duo of Mings and Konsa.

For Villa, Ollie Watkins is having to feed off scraps a lot of the time. Both midfields have looked capable but the link between midfield and attack has been missing.

Overall, it’s not being played at the kind of intensity you’d expect from two sides challenging for the Champions League spots.

HALF-TIME: Man Utd 0-0 Aston Villa

14:50 , Flo Clifford

A somewhat uninspiring half. Deadlock at Old Trafford as these two sides scrap unconvincingly for third place.

Plenty of action, but very few shots, and only one on target from either side: Amad’s great header which Martinez did excellently to tip wide of the post. Dalot blazed over from a fine ball by Fernandes and beat himself up about it, as well he might, with that being one of only two clear-cut chances for the hosts.

HALF-TIME: Man Utd 0-0 Aston Villa

14:48 , Flo Clifford

‘45+1: Villa have a late corner but McGinn’s delivery fails to meet Digne, with Shaw dealing with it adeptly.

Goalless at half time.

Man Utd 0-0 Aston Villa

14:45 , Flo Clifford

‘45: More end to end stuff; Watkins is involved down the inside-left channel but a fine last-ditch challenge by Yoro in the box brings an end to that. And United counter; Fernandes sends in a cross but yet again there’s no one to receive it.

Man Utd 0-0 Aston Villa

14:44 , Flo Clifford

‘42: A foray up the other end now, Watkins has the ball and tries to jink past Maguire but can’t shake off the big man; McGinn is there in space but gets crowded out at the back and ultimately Shaw sends it out.

Now a very silly yellow for Watkins, who is flagged offside as he runs towards goal, hesitates, then thumps the ball straight at Lammens anyway.

Dalot struggling to shake rust off

14:41 , Chris Wilson at Old Trafford

Maybe not the easiest chance for a right-back on his weaker foot, but Dalot has to score there. He even did the hard work first, bringing it down well before lashing it over.

Game lacking in quality so far

14:39 , Chris Wilson at Old Trafford

Not a great game for the neutral so far, with both teams enjoying periods of relative control though neither has been able to make it click in attack.

The hosts have strung together a couple of decent moves but they’re still lacking cohesion in the final third. Meanwhile, Villa have looked handy with the ball at their feet but haven’t provided Watkins with nearly enough service.

OVER THE BAR! Man Utd 0-0 Aston Villa

14:39 , Flo Clifford

‘38: For once Villa don’t have masses in their own box; Casemiro runs into the centre but Konsa blocks his attempt!

Now Dalot sprints in but thumps Fernandes’ lovely pass way over the bar!

Man Utd 0-0 Aston Villa

14:36 , Flo Clifford

‘35: Mainoo spots the run of Dalot but the move breaks down.

Casemiro sends in a ball... Bogarde gets his head to it by the far post. Another United corner. It’s played short to Amad, Cunha fizzes in a low ball... worked back out again. United keep it alive... Cunha whips in another cross but it loops out beyond Maguire’s reach at the back post.

Man Utd 0-0 Aston Villa

14:32 , Flo Clifford

‘31: Lammens is called into action for possibly the first time in this half, to boot a stray ball clear. Villa have a spell of possession and look to be growing into this a little, but the move breaks down as Mainoo nabs the ball off Buendia in the box.

Man Utd 0-0 Aston Villa

14:28 , Flo Clifford

‘28: Villa attempt to wrestle free after a loose pass by Mbuemo but Watkins is crowded out inside his own half.

Now Casemiro trips over his own feet. Everyone’s camped out in the Villa final third. Finally a breathless passage of play comes to an end as Onana has taken a knock.

Man Utd 0-0 Aston Villa

Man Utd 0-0 Aston Villa

14:25 , Flo Clifford

‘24: End to end; Villa break but concede the ball cheaply and United have another go... no dice. A penalty check is going on for an incident in that last corner involving Casemiro and Barkley... cleared. Casemiro went down too easily.

“We forgot that you were here” comes the chant from the away fans.

SAVE! Man Utd 0-0 Aston Villa

14:23 , Flo Clifford

‘22: Casemiro sends in another cross, this time from the right, and Mings gets in the way but sends it behind for yet another United corner. Lots of pressure in the Villa box at the moment.

Fernandes’ deep cross reaches Maguire’s noggin, he knocks it down for Amad but Martinez makes a great fingertip save, leaping to his right!

(Getty Images)

Man Utd 0-0 Aston Villa

14:22 , Flo Clifford

‘21: Dalot thumps a ball across, but no takers at the far post, and he’s well within his rights to be miffed at that, a great chance wasted.

Mings nods away the resulting corner.

Eyebrows raised at Carrick's team selection

14:21 , Chris Wilson at Old Trafford

Already a real emphasis from the hosts on working it wide and getting a cross in, which makes it strange that Benjamin Sesko hasn’t started. Mbeumo offers very little in challenging for those balls into the box, though Utd could get some luck from himself or Amad arriving at the back post.

Man Utd 0-0 Aston Villa

14:20 , Flo Clifford

‘19: Shaw goes direct but Martinez hops out of his area to grab the ball before Mbuemo can get there. United are probing.

SAVE! Man Utd 0-0 Aston Villa

14:19 , Flo Clifford

‘17: Out of nowhere! Cunha escapes down the left and curls in a great cross, and United shout for a penalty as Mings pulled Amad’s shirt as he attempted to get on the end of it, with Digne at the back post sending it behind for a corner.

The resulting set-piece is too deep for United to make anything of.

Man Utd 0-0 Aston Villa

14:15 , Flo Clifford

‘14: Watkins thumps Casemiro and this game has been about 50% free kicks so far. Dalot launches a long ball forward, Mainoo keeps it alive... Bogarde deals with it, but not enough, and United swiftly regain possession.

Fernandes sends in a cross but Konsa clears and Villa break! Maguire gets the better of Watkins as the Villa man tries to surge clear down the left channel. End to end stuff at the moment.

Man Utd 0-0 Aston Villa

14:12 , Flo Clifford

‘10: Casemiro has had a busy start in the fouls department, now he trips Buendia and Villa have a free-kick around 35 yards out. No less than half the team gather round to discuss how they’ll play it.

‘Waheyyyy,’ shout the crowd as the free-kick is played short and Villa promptly concede another set-piece as McGinn, trying to do something clever by blocking the wall, fouls Diallo.

Man Utd 0-0 Aston Villa

14:11 , Flo Clifford

‘9: Casemiro fouls Villa’s returning captain McGinn and then looks aghast to have conceded a free-kick in the process. Konsa then sends the ball out of play under little pressure.

Rogers sends in a cross from deep but Diallo tracks back to clear. Not the most fluid of starts from either side.

Man Utd 0-0 Aston Villa

14:09 , Flo Clifford

‘7: The volume goes up a notch as United break quickly. Casemiro tries to send Dalot in behind, but a Villa shirt gets there to intercept.

Man Utd 0-0 Aston Villa

14:05 , Flo Clifford

‘4: Shaw has the beating of Rogers as he charges down the left flank and curls in a good cross... but Digne nods it away from inside the box.

Man Utd 0-0 Aston Villa

14:04 , Flo Clifford

‘2: A promising start by United, a move worked forward to Diallo but blocked by Digne.

Incidentally, referee Anthony Taylor was nowhere near either side’s huddle, so that’s already a better start than to the Chelsea game yesterday.
