Manchester United U18s chase more FA Youth Cup history as Harry Maguire gives team talk

Maguire's team talk

Manchester United's academy has been the only positive in a miserable season for the club and Harry Maguire, Dean Henderson, John Murtough and Darren Fletcher were in attendance at Old Trafford to show their support as the next generation of pupils were tested in the semi-final of the FA Youth Cup.

Maguire's credentials to captain United have been heavily scrutinised this term but United's youngsters would have been grateful for the centre-back taking the time to come down before the game to give a team talk.

Maguire played in the 2011 FA Youth Cup final for Sheffield United and that's the year United last won the competition.

This side has the ability to end the club's over a decade wait for the FA Cup Youth Cup.

Brilliant Garnacho

Alejandro Garnacho was called up to Argentina's national team alongside Lionel Messi this week. Such was the brilliance of his finish to double United's lead in the second half, it was a goal seven-time Ballon d'Or winner Messi would have been proud of.

Garnacho has gone from strength to strength this season and he single-handedly inspired United to the semi-finals of the FA Youth Cup with his brace against Leicester in the previous round. He rose to the big occasion once again on Wednesday.

The winger looked dangerous from the first whistle and came close to scoring in the first half. It felt like a night in which United could be made to rue their squandered chances, but Garnacho's goal fired United to the final. He delivered again.

United will need Garnacho at his best in the final if they want to win another FA Youth Cup.

Hansen's raw talent

Isak Hansen has been a regular for United's U23s this season and he immediately caught the eye on Wednesday night. The 17-year-old, born in Norway, was the catalyst for orchestrating United's attacks and he was comfortable in tight spaces on the ball.

Hansen's technical ability is exceptional and his quality at this level that shines through. After making a bright start to the match, the creative midfielder played a delightful, lofted ball from the right side of the pitch over to Charlie McNeill. Wolves' goalkeeper, Palmi Arinbjornsson, was left in an unenviable position after misjudging the weight of the ball - McNeill duly slotted home.

It was a gift for McNeill and he certainly doesn't miss those - and he scored yet another poacher's goal in the closing stages.

Gore emulating Garner

James Garner is enjoying his second loan spell at Nottingham Forest this season and the parallels between Garner and midfielder Dan Gore were easy to make against Wolves. Gore's style is certainly reminiscent of that of Garner's. That's a compliment.

Gore was the anchor in United's midfield and he was impressive in midfield with Kobbie Mainoo. Wolves were a physical side - they are built in the reflection of their first team - but that didn't phase the tenacious Gore, or Mainoo for that matter.

The 17-year-old was confident dropping in between defenders to receive possession and he was the heart of United's play. Mainoo also enjoyed a productive night. The youngster was combative and dealt with Wolves' threat with great conviction.

Pupil receives lesson

United obviously want to win the FA Youth Cup but all those involved with the academy will tell you it's all about development at this level. Tyler Fredricson endured a difficult start to the match at left-back and he received a tough lesson in the first half.

Fredricson struggled with Wolves' physicality and the away side found joy down his left channel, however, he grew in confidence as the game progressed, which coincided with Wolves beginning to offer less going forward.

United will be delighted with recording a clean sheet on a memorable night.
