Manchester United to face Reading in FA Cup fourth round following win over Everton

Manchester United will face Reading in the fourth round of the FA Cup at Old Trafford.

The Reds, who last won the competition in 2016, defeating Crystal Palace 2-1 in the final, sealed their place in the fourth round of the FA Cup with a comfortable 3-1 victory over Everton at Old Trafford on Friday night. Toffees defender Conor Coady scored an goal, with Antony and Marcus Rashford also on the scoresheet to secure the win for Erik ten Hag's side.

United cruised past Frank Lampard's men in the third round and secured their seventh consecutive win in all competitions. The away side rarely troubled David de Gea, who was at fault for the Toffees' only goal of the game.

The reward for seeing off the relegation-threatened Everton is a fourth round showdown with Reading later this month. The Royals defeated Watford 2-0 in the third round on Saturday.

Following Friday night's win over Lampard's men, United boss Ten Hag spoke about the prospect of his side's trophy ambitions this season.

"Manchester United is always aiming for trophies. We are going for that, but you can't force this, we have to wait for it," he said.

"We have to focus on the next game and not think about trophies. It's far ahead, we have to work on the team, we have to work on the progress and development, and that is the only focus point at this moment.

"I think we have that [ability to win trophies]. We can fight, we can fight back if it's necessary, and that is important. We can act composed and stay composed, so we have resilience. I think we have a lot of good skills in the team to win games so we can also win prizes."

United's tie against Reading will be on the weekend of Saturday, January 28, 2023. TV and broadcasting schedules will have an impact on the exact date.
