Manchester United star Donny van de Beek shares rare recovery update after serious knee injury

Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek has shared an encouraging update on his rehabilitation from a serious knee injury that has ruled him out for the rest of the season.

The Netherlands international, who has struggled to live up to expectations since joining United from Dutch giants Ajax in September 2020, suffered the blow during the first half of the Reds' 3-0 win over Bournemouth at Old Trafford on January 3. Van de Beek's leg buckled under a challenge from Cherries defender Marcos Senesi.

It was confirmed the following week by United manager Erik ten Hag that the midfielder would miss the remainder of the campaign, but the Dutchman did announce that the former Ajax ace had not ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).

Ten Hag, speaking in mid-January, said: "Yes, it is his knee. On the long-term, it is looking really good, he will be back for the start of pre-season. The rest of the season he is out.

"I think everyone was really, thoughts are with him, it is terrible when you are in a middle of a season and you get a bad tackle, bad injury, it is always really disappointing and thoughts, your feelings are with the player, you express that."

Van de Beek has since been putting the hard yards in at the club's Carrington training base in his recovery programme and quest to be fit again ahead of pre-season for the 2023/24 campaign. On Monday evening, the Dutchman took to social media to share a positive update on his recovery.

On his Instagram page, Van de Beek, sharing a video of him doing a gym session, wrote: "Trust the process. Step by step."

The 25-year-old, who has scored just two goals in 60 appearances for United, would have hoped to have rekindled his Reds career under former Ajax boss Ten Hag this season. However, prior to his season-ending injury, he had played just ten times, meaning his long-term future at Old Trafford remains in doubt.

He spent the second half of last season on loan at Premier League rivals Everton and made just seven appearances, scoring one goal. He is under contract at Old Trafford until 2025 and has the option of an additional year.
