Manchester United's first starting XI under the Glazers and where they are now

In 2005, the Glazer Family agreed to increase their stake in Manchester United, and in doing so increased their percentage of the club over the threshold required to constitute a formal takeover.

Since that point and even before their official takeover, United fans have been incredibly vocal in their opposition to their American owners, with protests in and outside the stadium being incredibly common.

However, it now may be coming to the end with the Glazer family announcing that they are looking at 'strategic alternatives' for investment, which could include selling the club.

But going back in time to when the Glazers first took over, the first game of their reign was in the 2004/05 season of the Premier League. United faced Southampton in the final game of their league campaign and were 2-1 victors.

But who lined up for United that day and where are they now? The Manchester Evening News takes a look.

Roy Carroll

Despite being 45 years of age, Roy Carroll is still playing professional football. After leaving United he spent time at West Ham United, Rangers and Olympiacos. He now plies his trade for Dungannon Swifts in Northern Ireland.

Rio Ferdinand

Rio Ferdinand spent many more years at United winning several trophies. He left United in the 2013/14 season joining Queens Park Rangers before retiring.

Ferdinand is now a pundit and has his own Youtube channel, Vibe with Five.

Mikael Silvestre

Silverstre left United in 2008 to join Arsenal, however he played only 43 games for the Gunners. He spent time in Germany with Werder Bremen, also playing in the US and India before retiring.

John O'Shea

O'Shea joined Sunderland after leaving United, with O'Shea recording over 200 appearances for the Black Cats. The Irishman moved to Reading before retiring

Wes Brown

Brown also joined Sunderland after leaving United. The former England international Brown spent a season with Blackburn before finishing his career at Kerala Blasters in India.

Ryan Giggs

Giggs spent his entire career at United and became the record appearance holder in the Premier League, before this was eventually broken by Gareth Barry. Giggs went on to become assistant coach for United under David Moyes and go on to manage Wales.

Darren Fletcher

Fletcher moved to Stoke and West Brom before retiring. He now works in United's backroom as the club's Technical Director alongside Director of Football John Murtough.

Quinton Fortune

Fortune left United in 2006 and had a journeyman career, playing for Bolton Wanderers, Brescia, Tubize and Doncaster Rovers before retiring in 2010.

Alan Smith

Though a promising player early on his United career, Smith suffered a horrendous leg break in 2006 and was never the same. He would move to Newcastle United and then MK Dons before ending his career at Notts County, where he had a short spell as caretaker manager.

Wayne Rooney

Rooney had a long and successful career at United before returning to Everton in 2017. He is now a manager and has managed both Derby County and now DC United.

Ruud van Nistelrooy

Van Nistelrooy would go on to spend one more season at United, before leaving for Real Madrid after a falling out with Sir Alex Ferguson. He retired in 2012 at Malaga before moving into coaching.

As of this season, he has earned his first job in senior management at PSV Eindhoven.
