Manchester United 'retain Frenkie de Jong interest' amid Barcelona financial issues and more transfer rumours

Manchester United remain interested in Frenkie de Jong and and would be prepared to return for the Dutchman if he becomes available, according to reports.

De Jong has been a long-standing target for United, with Erik ten Hag keen to add more technical quality in midfield ever since his arrival over a year ago. The Reds were in pursuit of the 26-year-old throughout last summer, having agreed a fee with Barcelona but failed to finalise personal terms due to an issue with De Jong's deferred wages at Barcelona from the Covid-19 pandemic.

De Jong has always maintained that he wanted to stay at Barcelona and established himself as a key player as Xavi's side won La Liga. However 90min reports that his future at the Nou Camp could be affected by the Catalan club's transfer plans, with a long-term replacement for Sergio Busquets needed.

They are interested in a deal for Real Sociedad's Martin Zubimendi, but would likely need to raise money from player sales in order to fund the deal. As such, United are keeping tabs on the situation in case the opportunity arises to land a top midfield target, but will face competition from Bayern Munich who have actively enquired about the midfielder already.

Elsewhere, the Daily Mail says United target Mohammed Kudus would cost £40million.

Kudus enjoyed an excellent season with Ajax, scoring 15 goals in 36 appearances across the Eredivisie and Champions League. The 22-year-old also impressed for Ghana at the World Cup, with his form attracting interest from across Europe.

Brighton are said to be frontrunners to sign the versatile forward after holding talks with Ajax, but the report suggests United remain interested in a deal and have enquired about the possibility of a move.

Frustration in their pursuit of Mason Mount has led to their transfer net being cast a little wider, and while Kudus spent much of his time at Ajax in more attacking positions, he can also play in an advanced midfield role.
