Manchester United player ratings vs Barcelona as Fred and Antony brilliant

David de Gea

Had he not slipped, he might have kept Robert Lewandowski's spotkick out. Bailed out by Casemiro after a careless kick but saved well from Jules Kounde. 6

Aaron Wan-Bissaka

The renascent right-back selection was deserved and Wan-Bissaka was a force to be reckoned with at both ends. Rekindled his productive partnership with Antony but substituted in the 67th minute. 7

Raphael Varane

More composed than most in red for the rest of the first half after United conceded. This was another wily performance from one of the game's best defenders. 8

Lisandro Martinez

Defensively solid but Barcelona cut out the routes for him to break the lines with his passing. He found more gaps after the pause. 7

Luke Shaw

Offered very little in the first half and was much more assured and his backheel created the opening for the second goal. 7

Casemiro

Played Bruno Fernandes in for a huge chance in the third minute and made two huge blocks just before half-time. His experience was telling. 8

Fred

Energetic in pressing and justified his selection with a well-taken equaliser early in the second half and his running eventually overwhelmed Barcelona. 8

Bruno Fernandes

Should have scored his early chance and then naively fouled Alejandro Balde to concede a penalty but played in Fred to score and was vital to Antony's goal. 6

Jadon Sancho

Made no impact as the No.10 in the first half and his impact was instant when he switched to the flank in the second as the ball was worked to Fred. 5

Marcus Rashford

Guilty of being a little greedy with the ball at times when there were good options on. Helped tire Barcelona. 6

Wout Weghorst

Started impressively and put himself about but was absolutely no goalscoring threat again on his 11th consecutive start and was hooked at half-time. 4

Subs

Antony

Enhanced United's attack almost immediately and scored superbly to put United 2-1 up. 8

Alejandro Garnacho

Got in the middle to be involved in Antony's goal. 6

Diogo Dalot

Provided a fresh pair of legs against Barcelona's forwards. 6

Scott McTominay

Came on to protect the lead. 6

Manager

You could not question the XI Ten Hag picked but the positioning of Sancho and Fernandes was questionable. Rectified it in the second half by introducing Antony and relocating Sancho and Fernandes to their best roles. It had a bearing on both goals. 8
