Manchester United player ratings: Anthony Elanga and Nemanja Matic impress vs Atletico Madrid

David de Gea

Started nervously by failing to come off his line, hit the stands and almost botched a goal kick. 5

Victor Lindelof

Inexplicably started at right-back and the experiment was not remotely vindicated. Atletico were at their most menacing down Lindelof's side. 4

Raphael Varane

Whistled pre-match and Varane was not blameless for United's sloppy first-half. Shored up in the second but a night to forget. 5

Harry Maguire

On his heels when Joao Felix was on his toes for the opening goal, fabulous cross and header though they were. Better after the break. 5

Luke Shaw

No visible impact at either end and his form is not anywhere near at a level that suggests he is still an automatic pick. 5

Fred

Relocated to the base of midfield and was often swamped in a loose area. Predictably regressed when he has performed well further forward. 4

Paul Pogba

Dithered on the ball too much and failed to reach the heights of friend Geoffrey Kondogbia, who ran the midfield. Hooked again. 3

Bruno Fernandes

Sloppy with the ball and became increasingly narked, which worsened matters. Did not lack for effort and found Elanga for the equaliser. 6

Marcus Rashford

An unexpected inclusion and back on the right, where Rashford dislikes playing. Tried but failed to have an impact and resorted to selfishness. 3

Jadon Sancho

Hard-working enough but most of his urgent running was in the wrong direction. Struggled for space on either flank. 5

Cristiano Ronaldo

Starved of service, became frustrated and never looked like regaining his composure or scoring against a team he plundered two knockout hat-tricks against in the past. 4

Subs

Aaron Wan-Bissaka

Created an opening. 6

Alex Telles

Offered energy. 6

Nemanja Matic

Brought balance to midfield. 7

Anthony Elanga

Equalised brilliantly. 8

Jesse Lingard

Hardly saw the ball but shot on target. 6

Manager

The right-back experiment patently did not work and he selected too loose a midfield, mistakes he effectively acknowledged with a triple change that was belated. Again, though, his changes made a difference. 6
