Manchester United pay tribute to late Rangers hero Andy Goram

MANCHESTER UNITED have paid tribute to their former goalkeeper Andy Goram.

The ex-Scotland international passed away aged 58 after a short battle with cancer.

Rangers announced the tragic news of his passing this afternoon.

Goram joined Motherwell directly after leaving Rangers.

After two happy years spent at Fir Park, he was then on the lookout for a new club again.

Then came a surprise call from Sir Alex Ferguson, looking for Goram to join the Premier League giants in an emergency two-month deal to cover for injuries at the club.

And Man United have today paid their own tribute to the former keeper.

A statement from United reads: "Manchester United send their heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of our former goalkeeper Andy Goram after it was announced that he has sadly passed away, aged 58.

"Andy, who was nicknamed ‘The Goalie’, announced in April that he had terminal cancer and our club joins the football world today in mourning his passing.

"Goram is best known as a player for Rangers, with whom he made 260 appearances and proudly won five league titles and five domestic cups.

"He is a member of the Scottish Football Hall of Fame, and was named both the Scottish PFA and Football Writers’ Player of the Year in 1992/93. In a supporters' poll in 1999, he was voted Rangers' greatest goalkeeper of all time.

"Goram joined United on loan during the 2000/01 season and made two appearances in our successful run-in to the Premier League title. He was signed by Sir Alex Ferguson, who knew the goalkeeper well after handing him the first of his 43 Scotland caps in 1985, before taking him to the 1986 World Cup in Mexico.

"Everyone at the club is thinking of Andy’s family, loved ones and former colleagues at this extremely sad time."
