Erik ten Hag is believed to want former Motherwell defender Mitchell van der Gaag as his assistant manager at Manchester United.
The Red Devils are closing in on the Ajax boss as the man to become their new permanent gaffer on a four-year deal.
He will replace Ralf Rangnick, who has been in the role on an interim basis after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked by the Premier League club in November.
Van der Gaag is ten Hag's assistant at Ajax and The Athletic report that Motherwell's former Dutch defender could also move from Holland.
He previously worked with the club's reserves and has senior management experience in Portugal, where he won promotion to the top-flight with Belenenses.
The 50-year-old has also had stints as boss of SBV Excelsior and NAC Breda in the Netherlands.
After joining Motherwell in 1995 following time with PSV, the Ajax assistant made over 40 appearances, scoring a career-best seven goals in his second full season to help the Fir Park avoid Premier Division relegation.
Utrecht signed him in 1997 and spells at Martimo and Al-Nassr followed.
