Manchester United keeper completes loan switch as Mo Salah makes Liverpool trophy vow

Here are the latest Premier League headlines for Saturday, July 2.

Henderson makes Forest loan switch

Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson has completed his season-long loan switch to Nottingham Forest. Having made headway in his battle with David De Gea to become number one at Old Trafford during the 2020-21 season, the 25-year-old played second fiddle last term.

Henderson's issues after contracting Covid-19 in pre-season did not help the homegrown goalkeeper in that fight in a campaign that ended with just three United appearances across all competitions. The goalkeeper has now joined promoted Forest in search of regular first-team football, having flourished between the sticks during previous loan spells at Sheffield United between 2018 and 2020.

The agreement does not include an option to buy, with Steve Cooper's side covering his wages for the duration of the loan. England international Henderson cannot play against United as part of the terms of the agreement.

Salah's trophy vow

Mohamed Salah's new Liverpool contract has made him the highest-paid player in the club's history, but the forward insists it is the quest for trophies which drives him on. The Egypt international had entered the final year of his existing contract after negotiations over extending his stay dragged on for most of last season, with the 30-year-old's salary the stumbling block.

However, Salah committed himself to the club for three more years after a delegation from the club, led by new sporting director Julian Ward, flew out to finalise a deal with the player, who is still currently on holiday.

"It takes a little bit of time, I think, to renew, but now everything is done so we just need to focus on what's next," Salah, who joined for £37million from Roma in 2017, told liverpoolfc.com. "If I look back to that time when I came, the club were not winning many things, but I think I told you I had come to win trophies.

"I think we have won good trophies together and I think we can do it again. I have enjoyed my football here at the club and hopefully I will continue to enjoy it and win many trophies."

Tarkowski's a Toffee

Everton have made their first signing of the summer with former Burnley defender James Tarkowski joining on a free transfer. The 29-year-old's arrival had been anticipated after his contract at Turf Moor expired on Thursday, and he has now signed a four-year deal at Goodison Park.

"I'm excited to have joined Everton," said the twice-capped England defender. "It's a massive club. I'm really looking forward to the years ahead and I'm thankful for the opportunity that I've been given."

Everton, who have posted cumulative losses of more than £370million over the last three financial years, have needed to wait to begin their summer transfer business, but brought in vital funds with the sale of Richarlison to Tottenham earlier this week. In Tarkowski, they have landed a defender who formed a strong partnership with Ben Mee during his six seasons at Burnley, where he made 194 Premier League appearances after signing from Brentford.

Though he could not avoid the drop with the Clarets last term, Tarkowski ranked first in the Premier League for both clearances and shots blocked, and was second for aerial duels won. Frank Lampard will hope Tarkowski can now help fix an Everton defence that conceded the fifth-highest number of goals last term as the Toffees found themselves in a relegation battle until the final week of the season.

"I think the manager (Lampard) recognised my strengths, saw how I could fit into his system and hopefully improve the team," Tarkowski added. "He also saw my character and leadership skills - that what I can bring to a group will be good and positive. First and foremost, I'm a defender. That part of my game is something I've really worked on the past few years to become the best defender possible. I want to bring that to the team, but I also feel like I'm a good football player. I can move the ball well, I can pass, I can attack the ball in the other box, so I feel like I've got myself in a good place to be successful at a club like Everton."

Johnson signs new deal

Wales international Brennan Johnson has signed a new four-year contract with Premier League newcomers Nottingham Forest. Johnson, 21, scored 19 goals for Forest last season to help them earn promotion via the play-offs and reach the quarter-finals of the FA Cup, and then went on to help Wales reach their first World Cup finals in 64 years as he bagged his first international goal against Belgium last month.

All that came in his first full season in the Forest squad after the academy graduate spent the previous campaign on loan at Lincoln. He attracted attention from Premier League clubs last January but can now fulfil his top-flight ambitions with his hometown club.

"Brennan was instrumental in our success last year and he's got the potential to make a big impact in our return to the Premier League," Forest head coach Steve Cooper said. "He's spent his entire footballing life with Nottingham Forest and everyone at the club is very proud at what he's achieved to date. However, at just 21-years-old, his best days are ahead of him and he has a very high ceiling at what he could achieve. With that in mind, we're all delighted that he has committed himself to Nottingham Forest long term."
