Manchester United handed major injury concern in Champions League race with Liverpool

Manchester United are facing pressure from Liverpool in the hunt for Champions League qualification but have been dealt contrasting injury fortunes for key players Marcus Rashford and Raphael Varane.

The England international is a doubt for the visit of Wolverhampton Wanderers as Erik ten Hag's side look to end a run to two straight defeats while former Real Madrid defender, Varane, could make his much-anticipated return to the Red Devils squad.

It's been four weeks since the Frenchman last featured for United after being sidelined with an ankle injury. With Lisandro Martinez already out for the remainder of the season, Victor Lindelof and Luke Shaw have deputised as the centre-back pairing in their last two with the return of the trophy-laden defender a timely boost.

However, their goalscoring efforts remain problematic. Anthony Martial continues to struggle amid his barren run in the Premier League while Wout Weghorst continues to face criticism since his January move from Besiktas.

Rashford leads the way by a healthy margin for the goal output in Ten Hag's first season at the Theatre of Dreams but the former Ajax head coach faces time without the forward. The 25-year-old played in the defeat to West Ham United but now faces a spell out of the squad with a leg injury.

Ten Hag confirmed: "Rapha Varane is back and Rashford is doubtful. He has a problem, so injury on his leg. He's a big question mark for tomorrow but happy Rapha Varane is back.

"As I say, (Rashford is) doubtful, more than doubtful, so a big question mark. We have players who can score goals and they have the opportunity now to show it.

"Varane is experienced, knows how to win and will lead how to win, will guide us."

Man United host Wolves on Saturday (May 13) at 3pm.
