Manchester United supporters have claimed that Virgil van Dijk is not even as good as Lisandro Martinez after Jamie Carragher claimed the Liverpool centre-back is better than Nemanja Vidic.
Van Dijk has endured a torrid season at Anfield which was made worse on Sunday when he was at fault for Arsenal's first goal in a thrilling 2-2 draw. His attempted tackle went straight into the path of Gabriel Martinelli who rolled the ball past Alisson.
The manner of the goal led to fresh criticism of the Merseyside club's defender on social media which included one account, @Football__Tweet, posting: "Virgil Van Dijk's drop off is actually insane. People were comparing him to [John] Terry, [Vincent] Kompany, Rio [Ferdinand] and Vidic."

Carragher took exception to the post and responded: "VVD (Van Dijk) is far better than Vidic, who was a top centre-back, but have you forgot his performances against [Fernando] Torres? Rio and JT (Terry) had poor seasons in their career like all players, VVD is having one now. No centre-back in the Premier League era has ever had VVD’s impact on a team."
The ex-Liverpool man was referring to Vidic's infamous 2009 performance against Torres in a 4-1 defeat that would see the Serbian eventually sent off and the Spaniard score twice. United would go on to lift the title that year and the performance was seen as a blip in an otherwise brilliant career.
Many Reds supporters pointed out to Carragher their belief that Martinez is better than Van Dijk, while others made the point that Liverpool defender does not deserve to be in the same conversation as Vidic. Take a look at some of the responses below.
