Manchester United supporters are hopeful that the club’s chase for Frenkie de Jong is not yet over given the No.21 is set to remain vacant amid Casemiro's impending arrival.
Although he was not one of Erik ten Hag's original targets, Casemiro could be the defensive midfielder United have needed for years. A Spanish journalist on Twitter said Casemiro will wear the No.18 at United.
The number was vacated by Bruno Fernandes in July, who took the No.8 following the exit of Juan Mata. Other former United players to have worn the No.18 include Paul Scholes and Ashley Young.

The discussion on some United fans’ lips is around the number Casemiro is not set to take up. It’s now well-known among Reds supporters that De Jong’s favoured shirt is the No.21, which he wore at Ajax and currently wears for Barcelona.
The jersey is free following Edinson Cavani’s United exit in June. Some United fans on Twitter have suggested that it means United are still attempting to push ahead with De Jong, keeping the number free as a luring tactic.
Unfortunately for said supporters, the MEN understands the imminent addition of Casemiro now makes any prospective signing of De Jong highly unlikely this summer.
