Manchester United discover opponents for UEFA Youth League last-16 tie

Manchester United's Under-19s will face Borussia Dortmund in the last 16 of the UEFA Youth League, it has been confirmed.

United's youngsters, who cruised into the first knockout phase of the competition with five wins from six in Group F, will lock horns with Dortmund on home soil over a one-legged tie.

The German club were forced to quality for the last-16 via the play-offs after finishing runners-up in Group C, which also included Sporting, Ajax and Besiktas.

Fortunately, they got the better of Empoli to progress to the knockout stages, winning 5-3 away from home.

Although United's youngsters will be encouraged not to look too far ahead, they will face either Atletico Madrid or Real Madrid in the quarter-finals, again at home, if they get the better of Dortmund next month.

On the importance of competing in the Youth League, head coach Neil Wood said: "It's been great to be back in the competition. We've had a couple of years out and you miss it, the whole experience of travelling away.

"They're quick trips where you're in one day, you play and you're straight back out of the country.

"It's really good to be back and it's been nice to get a good start as well."

United will face Dortmund on either Tuesday, March 1 or Wednesday, March 2, before, potentially, facing either Atletico or Madrid on Tuesday, March 15 or Wednesday, March 16.

If they manage to go all the way in the competition, they will compete in the final at the Colovray Stadium in Nyon, Switzerland, on Monday, April 25.
