Manchester United defender might have played last game for club

When the electronic board was raised in the 86th minute at the end of Manchester United's 2-1 victory against Liverpool in August, Aaron Wan-Bissaka replaced Diogo Dalot and set foot on the Old Trafford pitch for the first time in 177 days.

Wan-Bissaka had last played at Old Trafford in a goalless draw against Watford in February and he's actually played under 200 minutes in front of a home crowd this entire calendar year.

The 25-year-old was informed he could leave United at the end of last season, but there's seemingly been little interest shown in the right-back, with talk of Crystal Palace having an interest in re-signing him quickly dying down.

United invested £50million in Wan-Bissaka in the summer of 2019 after deciding he was the best signing from a detailed shortlist of 804 options.

Wan-Bissaka was a certain starter with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in charge, perhaps because he had spent a vast sum on him, but he lost his place under Ralf Rangnick and hasn't regained it under Erik ten Hag.

Solskjaer wanted to sign Kieran Trippier to 'compete' with Wan-Bissaka in the summer of 2021 but it wouldn't have been a competition. Trippier is the much more accomplished full-back.

Diogo Dalot has been without competition at right-back this season and he's made appearances 20 from a possible 21 games, which is a testament to his durability, but United are a slice of misfortune away from being left without a reliable player in that position and that is a problem. Ten Hag needs two quality right-backs.

Wan-Bissaka has been sidelined with injury this season and Erik ten Hag played Tyrell Malacia at right-back in his absence against Fulham, but the Dutchman was vulnerable on that side and he's not an attractive proposition to deputise for Dalot.

Victor Lindelof can play at right-back but that's obviously not his natural position and addressing the right-back problem must be Ten Hag's priority after signing a centre-forward in the January transfer window.

When a replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo has been signed, a new right-back is required in January and Wan-Bissaka should be sold.

If United are unable to source a right-back in the January window, they have other options already at the club like Brandon Williams, who has just returned to fitness after an injury.

Williams, 22, has trained in Spain this week and he started against Cadiz at left-back, but he might be set for a bigger role for the rest of the campaign, while United also have the option to recall Ethan Laird from his loan with Queens Park Rangers.

Laird, 21, has made an impressive 17 starts in the Championship, becoming a first-team regular, this season and it's thought that he could still have a future at Old Trafford after impressing United staff with his performances in the second tier.

Wan-Bissaka has not given a true account of himself for some time now and it's likely he needs a change of scenery to find his form again. Ten Hag does not rate Wan-Bissaka, but there will be a manager elsewhere who would love to have him.

United play Burnley at Old Trafford in the League Cup on December 21 and that could be Wan-Bissaka's last game for the club, providing that Dalot needs a rest after the World Cup, ahead of the opening of the January window.

Should Dalot be unavailable, Ten Hag could play Malacia, Lindelof or Williams at right-back instead and that would mean Wan-Bissaka could leave the club in January having only played four minutes - against Liverpool - in his final season.
