Manchester United cult hero makes shock Newcastle claim in Champions League prediction

Manchester United cult hero Teddy Sheringham has tipped Newcastle United to beat the Red Devils to a Champions League spot. Eddie Howe's side currently sit in the table after recording their sixth win in seven matches with a comfortable victory at Southampton.

The Magpies only blemish in an otherwise perfect October was a goalless draw at Old Trafford, and this was followed by victory over Everton and a statement success at Tottenham. Newcastle hold a four-point lead over the Red Devils, although Erik ten Hag's side do hold a game in hand.

Sheringham is confident the Magpies can maintain their momentum and earn a place in next season's Champions League. The former England international has praised Howe for signing players that 'work best for his team', rather than going for the 'best players'.

Sheringham believes league leaders Arsenal and champions Manchester City will finish in the top four, and has also named Liverpool despite a shaky start to the season. But perhaps most surprisingly, the pundit has backed the Magpies to claim fourth spot ahead of former sides Manchester United and Tottenham.

He told Genting Casino: "I think Newcastle can get into the Champions League spots. Eddie Howe has been very impressive, he’s a centre-half by nature and has clearly instilled that in the team. The structure is great but they also have flair players who can go out and let the team play to their best of their ability.

"I’ve been very impressed and the signings have been great. They haven’t just gone for the best players which has worked well, rather for the players that Eddie thinks will work best for his team. I think Newcastle will squeeze into the last top four space, along with City, Arsenal and Liverpool."
