Manchester United confirm Tom Huddlestone to remain in academy role

Tom Huddlestone will continue his player-coach role in Manchester United's academy.

The experienced midfielder joined United last summer after leaving Championship side Hull City. Huddlestone replaced Paul McShane in the role of player-coach, after the former Republic of Ireland international called time on his playing career.

Huddlestone remaining in the United academy means he has the chance to give the next generation experience of playing alongside a veteran.

Huddlestone will feature for United's under-21s as an overage outfield player in the Premier League 2. He will also be able to feature in the club's Papa John's Trophy campaign, with United taking on Salford City, Stockport County and Bolton Wanderers.

A United statement read: "Tom Huddlestone is to continue as player-coach for Manchester United's Under-21s. The former England international started the innovative role in the academy in August 2022, fulfilling a position previously held by Paul McShane.

"By working with the other coaches, he has been able to pass on his experience to the club's youngsters, even during some matches when taking to the field.

"The experienced midfielder will continue to create various unique development opportunities for United’s academy players by coaching from within training sessions and driving daily standards on and off the pitch.

"Tom will continue to further his coaching skills, working alongside academy experts, to deliver an excellent programme for our players. As well as being a full England international, he has also represented Derby County, Tottenham, Wolves and Hull City in the past."
