Manchester United coach joins Wales national team

Manchester United coach Eric Ramsay has joined the Wales backroom staff ahead of their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign.

Ramsay, 31, will join as an assistant coach for the Welsh national team while also remaining in his role as a first-team coach for United.

Wales manager Robert Page made the announcement on Thursday, with West Ham coach Nick Davies also joining the national side set-up as head of performance.

Ramsay and Davies replace Kit Symons and Tony Strudwick, who left their posts in January following Wales' disappointing World Cup campaign.

Speaking of the appointments, Page hailed Oswestry-born Ramsay as one of the best young coaches in football. “Nick and Eric will be two great additions to our staff," he said. "Nick has a wealth of experience having been involved in top clubs and Eric is arguably one of the best young coaches in football at this moment in time.

“The changes give us an opportunity to build on our success, by drip feeding new players into the squad at the right times. Hopefully in the next 12 months we'll then have the next batch of players to represent Wales at the top level.”

Ramsay, who was kept on at United by Erik ten Hag after joining under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, is relishing the opportunity to test himself at international level.

“Having grown up in Llanfyllin, I’m incredibly excited to be joining the Welsh setup,” he said. “There’s so much excitement around the national team and its recent success, it’s a great time to be joining.

Ramsay joins Wales at a time of transition following the retirements of both Gareth Bale and Joe Allen earlier this year, but is excited by the chance to form part of the next generation of Welsh football.

He added: “With the squad having gone through a slight transition, it feels like a new beginning. I’ve already had some good conversations with Rob and Alan Knill, so I think the ingredients are there for it to be an exciting time.”

Wales begin their qualification campaign for the next European Championship when they face Croatia and Latvia later this month.
